If you think you drive your car more dangerously when you're stressed, you're not alone. As it turns out, the more frazzled you get while driving, the more prone you are to engaging in risky driving behaviors.

A recent survey of 500 WA drivers by Pure Profile Research (5/2011) revealed that drivers are the most stressed out in the afternoon, and may end up ignoring road rules and speed limits.

Of the 500 people in the study, when stressed and driving:

  • 60% remarked that they take more risks
  • Men were more likely to ignore road rules, and their concentration was compromised (42% of men, versus 35% of women)
  • Young drivers (18-24 years old) were most likely to ignore road rules
  • 90% of people speed
  • Some admitted to tailgating, improper merging, cutting off drivers, and zipping in and out of lanes

Losing your concentration for even one moment can put your car and your health in peril. You are much more likely to be in a car accident, and get injured or injure someone else. Additionally, if the car accident is at-fault, you will have more issues with your car insurance later. It is best to remain calm while driving, and focused on the task at hand: Driving.

If you find yourself stressing out while driving, consider the following options:

  • Carpool with other drivers for at least part of the week
  • Take the bus, or other form of public transportation to work
  • Adjust your work hours to avoid peak rush-hour traffic
  • If caught in traffic, remember to take a deep breath, sit back, and enjoy the time. Being frustrated will not get you home any faster, or;
  • Get out of traffic and go to the park to read a book, go for a walk, or have a bite to eat while you wait for traffic to clear up

There is no sense in stressing out while driving. It puts your car insurance rates, your car, other people, and your health (both long and short term) at risk.
