Pre-Purchase Items to Consider

• AREA OF COVERAGE: Does the health insurance company do business in your area?
• NETWORK OF PROVIDERS: Are the doctors and hospitals you want to visit in the health insurer’s “network” of providers? If not, you may be subject to “balance billing.” This happens when the insurer reimburses the health care provider less than the actual bill. Be wary – you may be responsible for the difference!
• PRESCRIPTION DRUGS: Each health insurance company has its very own list of approved and generic drugs. If you chose a name brand drug when an exact generic equivalent is available, you may be responsible for the difference in cost. It wise to spend some time doing a little research if you’re on a drug regimen.
• ARE YOU INSURABLE: Health insurance companies are required to accept 92% of applicants. They are all mandated to use the same health insurance risk questionnaire, and are consistent with the approval process. If you’re rejected by one, the others will reject you as well. There are other options, such as Health Savings Accounts, which we can discuss with you.
